When you think back to your childhood, what comes to mind? You probably remember hitting up the arcade and playing video games. Graphics were a lot different back then. Instead of the HD graphics of today, you played games with 8-bit pixel graphics. Pay homage to the good old days by visiting Pixelated: Sculpture by Mike Whiting at the Denver Botanic Gardens. You’ll feel like you’re walking around in an old-school video game when you visit this exhibit.
About the Sculpture Garden
Whiting used the sculpture garden to represent two distinct styles. First, there is the style reminiscent of 8-bit graphics. Video game producers used these graphics back in the day because of technological limitations. They simply couldn’t make more detailed graphics. These graphics went out of style for years, but they have made a comeback of sorts due to the popularity of Minecraft. It’s famous for its 8-bit style.
Along with the 8-bit style, Whiting used a minimalist style for the sculpture garden. Minimalist artwork lacks detail, much like 8-bit graphics.
Whiting explores the two styles. Both styles have unique approaches but basically, end up with the same results. You’ll see it for yourself when you visit the garden. This is an interesting display, and it’ll make you think about approaches and outcomes.
Take a Tour
While you can wander through the sculpture garden on your own, it’s so much more enjoyable with a guide. The garden offers curated tours on Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30 a.m. If you can’t make one of those tours, it also offers them on select Friday mornings and Saturday evenings.
